Implementing sustainable programs that ensure solid waste is managed in such a way that protects public health and the environment resulting in cleaner communities and a positive impact on the economy.
Region M aims to reduce solid waste in landfills through source reduction, recycling and programs designed to educate the public about the importance thereof.
In 1990, to facilitate regional planning for solid waste management, the Missouri General Assembly passed SB530. This law provided guidelines for the formation & operation of 20 solid waste management districts within the state. The REGION M-SWMD was formed pursuant to RSMo., Section 260.305, and is officially recognized by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR).
The REGION M Waste Management District includes the counties of Barton, Jasper, Newton, McDonald, Vernon, and their participating cities. Participation is voluntary and is formally established through a resolution of adoption filed with the district office by the member governments.
Region M has an annual grant round, resulting in funding for recycling centers, private businesses, and non-profit organizations that focus on recycling. The grant application process is competitive, following all guidelines set for by the state of Missouri and the MO Department of Natural Resources Waste Management Program.
Region M operates through a fiscal year starting July 1 and ending on June 30. The Management Council (all member Counties and Cities) meet each year in August. During this meeting, there is a review of the previous year, the Executive Board is appointed, and officers are elected.
